Earlier this year, before the MLC domestic draft, Tajinder Dhillon faced a critical decision. He could have opted for a comfortable, yet limited role with the San Francisco Unicorns, where he had only faced 21 balls in two years. Or, he could take a leap of faith, seeking a team that would recognize and utilize his batting prowess, granting him the chance to shine.

For Tajinder, a family man with a newborn, this was more than just a career choice. He could have stayed with the Unicorns, collecting a $55,000 retainer while remaining on the periphery. Instead, he chose to pursue the spotlight he had sought since moving to America, a stage reminiscent of his time in the IPL, where he spent two seasons on the bench with different teams.

Hailing from Dholpur, Rajasthan, Tajinder possesses a spirit that wouldn't allow him to simply blend in. Having fought his way through the competitive Indian domestic system, he wasn't willing to sacrifice ambition for an easy life. He entered the domestic draft, knowing he might go unsold, facing financial uncertainty in a country where opportunities for cricketers outside the MLC are not always guaranteed.

MI New York's management jumped at the chance to bring Tajinder back into their fold once he became a free agent. Previously, he had been acquired by their parent franchise, Mumbai Indians, in the 2019 IPL. MINY narrowly missed securing him in the 2023 MLC draft. The team management had confidence in him from the start of the season. While he showed glimpses of his potential, a truly defining innings had remained elusive.

Against the Orcas on Friday, Tajinder was promoted to number 4 for the first time in his MLC career. He seized the opportunity with both hands. He began cautiously, scoring 5 runs off 9 balls, seemingly sizing up the situation. Then, he unleashed a furious assault on the Orcas' bowlers, smashing 6 sixes in 7 balls during his blistering innings of 95 runs off just 35 deliveries.

His explosive hitting overshadowed Nicholas Pooran's magnificent century. Pooran, who remained unbeaten with a strike rate of 180, saw his own brilliance momentarily dimmed by Tajinder's incredible strike rate of 271. Their partnership of 158 runs was a spectacle of power hitting.

Anil Kumble, former head coach at Punjab Kings, once noted, "Tajinder can hit a spinner for six off his very first ball - even if he's half asleep at 4 a.m." This rare ability was evident as he dominated Raza, hitting him for three consecutive sixes. One was a flick over deep midwicket, another a graceful lift over extra cover, and the last a powerful hit over the bowler's head. Tajinder is one of the few domestic players capable of clearing the ropes off the back foot against spin bowling.

Tajinder's story is one of resilience and overdue recognition. He was at risk of being permanently relegated to the sidelines, but has finally had his moment to shine, validating his belief in himself ahead of the draft.
